The Seven Seals — The Legal Framework
The seven seals of Revelation are not a sequence of disasters. They are the legal framework that authorises the tribulation sequence. The Lamb opens the seals — judicial authority as the one who paid the price. The seals grant authority. The events play out as that authority is exercised.
The Scroll and the Lamb
> Revelation 5:1-5 — Then I saw in the right hand of him who was seated on the throne a scroll written within and on the back, sealed with seven seals. And I saw a mighty angel proclaiming with a loud voice, ‘Who is worthy to open the scroll and break its seals? ‘ And no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth was able to open the scroll or to look into it\… And one of the elders said to me, ‘Weep no more; behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has conquered, so that he can open the scroll and its seven seals. ‘
The scroll is the Book of Life — written at the foundation of the world, containing everything God foreknew across the six thousand years. Sealed with seven seals. The Lamb alone is worthy to open it because he paid the price to redeem what the scroll records. The opening of the seals is the judicial act of the one who paid the price for the covenant.
The First Six Seals — The Legal Authorisation
Seal 1: A white horse. Rider with a bow, a crown given, going forth conquering and to conquer. The announcement phase. The authority to go forth is issued. Seal 2: Peace taken from the earth. A great sword given. Authority to remove the peace that has restrained conflict. Seal 3: Economic scarcity. Wheat and barley rationed. Oil and wine spared. Deliberate limitation. Seal 4: Death and Hades, authority over a quarter of the earth, killing with sword, famine, pestilence, and wild beasts. The first mortality scale. Seal 5: The souls of the martyred under the altar cry out — how long? They are told to wait until their number is complete. The tribulation has a fixed number of martyrs. Seal 6: The great cosmic signs — earthquake, sun black, moon as blood, stars falling, sky rolled up, every mountain and island moved. The leaders of the earth hide and cry for the mountains to fall on them.
The Seventh Seal — Silence
> Revelation 8:1 — When the Lamb opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven for about half an hour.
Silence. The most significant response in the entire heavenly court. Seven trumpets are given to seven angels. A censer of incense is filled and offered with the prayers of all the saints. Then the censer is filled with fire from the altar and cast to the earth. Thunder, lightning, earthquake. The mercy window is closing. The trumpets are about to begin. The silence is the weight of what is coming — the transition from the legal framework to its execution.
