The New World — The Bride Of Christ Is the City
The identity of the bride of Christ is one of the clearest examples in Revelation of tradition reading straight past what the text says. The angel tells John explicitly who the bride is. The text makes the identification directly.
> Revelation 21:9-10 — Then came one of the seven angels\… and spoke to me, saying, ‘Come, I will show you the Bride, the wife of the Lamb. ‘ And he carried me away in the Spirit to a great, high mountain, and showed me the holy city Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God.
The angel says come, I will show you the bride. He then shows the New Jerusalem. Not a woman. Not a multitude. Not the church. A city. The text makes the identification directly: come I will show you the bride — and shows a city. Under Rule 1 the bride is the city.
The Church Is the Guest, Not the Bride
> Revelation 19:9 — And the angel said to me, ‘Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb. ‘
Invited. Blessed. Guests. Not the bride. The church is called to the marriage supper. The parable of the ten virgins confirms this — they are waiting for the bridegroom with their lamps. They are not the bride. They are the wedding party, the guests, preparing to enter the feast. The church has been told for centuries that it is the bride. The text says it is the guest. Both roles are honoured. But they are different roles.
The Marriage Is a Covenant
The marriage is not a man-and-woman relationship metaphor applied to Christ and the church. It is a covenant — the same legal instrument as the 70 weeks contract, as the Sinai covenant, as the Jubilee calendar. The Lamb enters an eternal covenant with the New Jerusalem — the permanent establishment of God ‘s kingdom. The new creation that comes down from heaven as the permanent home of God with His people. Revelation 21:3: the tabernacle of God is with men. The Feast of Tabernacles fulfilled permanently. After Tabernacles there are no more feasts. The story the feast calendar was telling is complete.
