The First Resurrection — Two Specific Groups

The first resurrection is one of the most misunderstood events in prophetic teaching. The tradition typically presents it as a mass resurrection of all believers at the beginning of the millennium. The text is considerably more specific.

What Revelation 20:4-6 Actually Says

> Revelation 20:4-6 — I saw thrones, and seated on them were those to whom the authority to judge was committed. Also I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for the testimony of Jesus and for the word of God\… They came to life and reigned with Christ for a thousand years. The rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years were ended. This is the first resurrection. Blessed and holy is the one who shares in the first resurrection! Over such the second death has no power.

The first resurrection includes those on the thrones with judicial authority and the beheaded martyrs of the tribulation. These two groups come to life and reign. The rest of the dead do not come to life until the thousand years are ended. The first resurrection is not a universal event. It is a specific event involving two specific groups, while the general saved remain at rest until 3030 AD.

The Pre-Tribulation Rapture Contradiction

If a general resurrection and rapture of all believers occurred before the tribulation began, Revelation 20:4 would be impossible. Those who reign in the millennium had not worshipped the beast or received his mark. If all believers were already resurrected and with Christ before the tribulation, there would be no believers remaining on earth to face the beast, refuse the mark, and be beheaded. The existence of this specific group of beheaded martyrs who reign in the millennium requires believers to be present on earth during the tribulation. The pre-tribulation rapture eliminates the group the text requires to exist.

The Significance of the Second Death Having No Power

> Revelation 20:6 — Blessed and holy is the one who shares in the first resurrection! Over such the second death has no power, but they will be priests of God and Christ and will reign with him for a thousand years.

The second death is the lake of fire — the final judgment at the Great White Throne. Those in the first resurrection are exempt from the second death. Their record is sealed. Their status is fixed. They reign as priests and judges during the thousand years, and when the Great White Throne judgment arrives at 3030 AD, the second death has no claim on them. The sealing through martyrdom during the tribulation is the permanent sealing that the second death cannot reverse.
